Poem Questions

1. How many workeres come on single status? How many bring their families? How do they get

2. What do government officials of the workers’ home countries think about their peoples’ plight?

3. Where are most workers from? What is the average age of a worker?

4. What is the average pay of a worker? Where do they live? What is their work schedule

 5. Do most workers come her on their own?

1. This shows how difficult it is for them. Not only are they slaving away for little pay, but they may be away from their families, too. Also, the second part goes into  how they were treated before and if the ciurcumstances are different.

2. This asks the question, Do their own countires even care and are they really trying to stop this? Also, it makes you wonder if they really want this to happen. The answer to this could led me to if this cycle can really be stopped. Their countries know of the explotation of their people.

3. This question would provide more information about them and once again see their circumstances, as well as dig deeper into the reasons they are here and if their family sent them away. Also, are they truly coming for    their family?

4. These questions dig deeper int the reasons any of us are investigating this topic. These answers tell why they are truly mistreated and why they need recognition for their work and better living conditions.

5. If they did not come here on their own, that gives me an even better reason to write and discuss their problems.

     Instructions

1. Name and order a list of sources of material to use as research for the topics:

US companies im port 732 million clothing garments from Bangladesh
Walmart doenst pay any taxes to Bangladesh for exports

The workers, charged up to US$1,600 - or two years salary - by their local recruiters to find jobs in the region, leave their families behind and relocate to

the Gulf labour camps where they often work in 50 degree heat and face life-threatening industrial accidents, all for between US$5 and $7 a day.  With

recruiting agents, companies and government officials pointing fingers at one another, Al Jazeera asks the tough question: Is enough being done to improve

the appalling conditions facing Asian labourers in the Gulf?

Arab News: GCC labor laws reform

ABU DHABI, 23 January 2008 — The Gulf Arab states and labor-exporting Asian countries yesterday agreed to join forces against the exploitation of
Asian workers.
Labor ministers from the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and their counterparts from Asia will propose an action plan to protect the welfare of
workers, a plan aimed at “preventing illegal recruitment practices” both in the country of origin and in host countries. The declaration also called for
“promoting welfare and protectionmeasures for contractual workers ... and preventing their exploitation at origin and destination

Gulf News

The 3+3 law proposes a residency cap of six years for unskilled labourers. If the law is passed, then unskilled workers will come to work in a GCC country

with a three-year labour contract which can only be renewed once.\

Secondly, the focus would be on equipping the labourers with knowledge and increasing their awareness in order to avoid being exploited.

An 11 point plan was discussed and approved by the ministers to limit the number of foreign workers in the GCC.

The growing number of expatriates in the region has become a matter of grave concern to local governments as unemployment levels have also risen

proportionately.

However the law would only be applied separately to each country, which means that a labourer could continue to work in the GCC after completing six years

but not in the same country.

Ameinfo

Labor ministers from the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and their counterparts from Asia will propose an action plan to protect the welfare of

workers, according to their Abu Dhabi Declaration.

South Korean firm Ultra Construction & Engineering feels that it would be able to handle more jobs of similar nature in Qatar in coming years

Bahrain started a national labor inspection campaign after the end of six-month general amnesty granted to illegal workers

Arabian Bussiness

Bahrain’s government stressed the need for Gulf states to find alternative countries to source foreign workers from on Tuesday, warning that

overdependence on existing labor export countries may lead to imposition of their own working conditions.

Gulf nations are in negotiations with Vietnam to source workers

According to statistics quoted by newswire AFP, there are around 35 million people living in the GCC, of whom 37% are foreign workers.

Expatriates account for around 80% of the population of Qatar and the UAE, while in Kuwait it is roughly 60% and in Bahrain it is about 40%, according to

statistics compiled by Human Rights Watch.

MENA

Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—have witnessed an unprecedented economic and social transformation.

since about one-third to one-half of the GCC population is now under the age of 15. Given limited room for further employment in the government sector,

unemployment among national workers has started to increase in most GCC countries.

According to the labour agreement the sponsors in Qatar are required to execute an employment contract as prescribed indicating, inter alia, salient

features like wages and other benefits. The contract is first required to be

attested by the Department of Labour, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of the Government of the State of Qatar and is then presented to the Indian

Embassy for further attestation. On the basis of such attested contract

the sponsor can either arrange recruitment of manpower through the Government of India or its agent or an agent registered with the Government of India

or directly from the market.

2.       Explain why you found these sources helpful.

1WorldCommunication - had tons of info on the exploitation of cheap labopr in undeveloped countries by large companies. The information found on the site

mainly regarded Southeast Asia. 1World Communication is and organization trying to stop the exploitation of poor countries. The credibility of the site is

not solid because of tghe site format and lack of sources.

Al-Jazeera- Al-Jazeera had a lot of basic material on the situation in the GCC. This site helped me to  lay a foundation for what to ivestigate further and what to look for. I fond there material to be quite credible because

of the investiagtions in the GCC they had done. They also are a trusted news source funded by the Qatari government.

Arab News: GCC labor laws reform-Arab News provided me information on a recent attempt to lessen the unfairness that the laborers are treated with. It told of a recent meeting in Abu Dhabi between the GCC countries. Arab

News informed more on how the conditions were in seperate countries and how they try to fix some of the problems legally. Arab News is a newspaper ,which gives them some legitimacy, but, I found no sources.

Gulf News - Gulf News also talked of the labor law reform for the GCC in Abu Dhabi on Jan. 23. They went into greater detail of the law created. Also there i saw opinion on the bill on how changing the current laws would

make the construction suffer.Gulf News is another local GCC newspaper that is fairly legit because of the similarity of their stories to other agencies stories.

Ameinfo- Ameinfo gave me material on the Abu Dhabi confrnce once again. Also they had linkd that had other stories. Some of the stories included what countries have become increasingly interested in Qatar. It is a great place

for finical and bussiness info. I found this MiddleEastern based newspaper credible because of the similarities between the other Arab newspapers.

Arabian Bussiness- Arabian Bussiness brought a new topic of labor that had recently happened in Bahrain. During a meeting there, leaders discussed looking for labor from new sources, not the most common countries.

It also talked about how Bahrain handles there labor policy and the precentages of foregin workers in the GCC countries. Arabian Bussiness is another UAE based newspaper.

MENA- Mena talks about more general statistics of the GCC. They include, life expectancy, numbers on GCC export, numbers on GCC growth, GDP, and etc. This site gave me some numbers to show how dependant the countries
are on forgein laborers. IMF had sources and contact info indicating confidence in what they were reporting.

Zawya - Zawya once again discussed the meeting in Abu Dhabi. Zawya differed from the other sites because it had more quotes of the leaders that took place in the meeting. The site was difficult because of th constant
pestering of them to get you to order their online newspaper.

Third World Traveller - Third World Traveller brought forth a lot of bad things on Nike. THey talked of the unfairness of their condition, wages, and the risk they were putting on their workers. They also brought on
accusations of unjustness on Disney and HP. The credibility of the site is quite unkown because it is just a plain website done by a single person who gathered info.

Wakeup Walmart- Wakeup Walmart, as it name implies, critized Wal-Mart on their employees labor and wages. This site did also dicuss their child labor, illegal immigrant employees, and their unfair health benfits, but mainly the
cases of their American employees. This site if pretty convincing of being genuine because it is organized by the United Food and Commercial Workers.

Indian Embassy - The Indian Embassy of Doha prvided some background of the relationship between Qatar and Indian labor. It also gave stats on the
conditions of their people here in Qatar. I find this source quite credible ,because it comesright from the source. I beleive to find these sources may be the
most accurate sources of material.

Sri Lankan Embassy - The Sri Lankan Embassy did not have much info about their people's labor in Qatar. It did give lots of info on Sri Lanka.

3.       Classify what sources are best for what kind of information.

Arab News: GCC labor laws reform-All of the sites above helped with the same kind of resource material I gathered. They all talked of recent efforts to

modify the current position in which the laborers and construction is in. None of these sources are adding what they think or beleive on this story.

Indian Embassy - Both of the embassies talked some about the relationship between Qatar and their country.

Wakeup Walmart - These sources provided material on the big corporations mistreatring and scamming their laborers. They discussed their wages, health

issues, over-working, and many other topics.

MENA - Both of the sources gave basic info on how much they are payed, where they are, what there conditions are, and etc.

4.       Identify what kinds of things make that source valid.

Arabian Bussiness
Zawya
Ameinfo
Gulf News
Arab News
Al- Jazeera- All of these source are acredited news agancies or newspapers.

Sri Lankan and Indian Embassies- They both are representing their countries and ,therfore, and government agencies. Their info comes straight from the

source and the people. They are as trstworthy as their own government, however tustworthy they are.

Third World Traveller- The sitemaker claimed to have had made a trip to the areaand seen things personally. Also he said he had received info from

univerity studies.

1World Communication- This sites claims to have sent missionaries to the area. They are also a non-profit organization that supports the people they defend.

Wakeup Wal-Mart- This site is a site organized by an officially organized union. They got their material from the union members who work for who they are

critizing.

MENA- MENA is part of the IMFs site. IMF is the International Monetary Fund, because they are an accredited charity, i beleive that makes them valid.

5.       Choose what source material you found most suitable for your topic.

I beleive of all the sources that i looked at and researched, had good, useable info. I did not gather the correct info on the questions I posed to be able to

answer them. I am also stil waiting on a reply from two of my sources. The sources I have found most apporaite for the topic are: the embasies of India and

Sri Lanka, Al-Jazeera, Gulf News, Arab News, MENA, and Arabian Bussiness. I found all oof these sites imformative of recent attempts to change and

information about the current situation.

6.       Organize and write your lyrics/poem.

First Draft of Back to Work

Why are all these people keepin me down?

They all just wanna deny it, put their head in the sand.

Who are they really hurtin me or themselves?

Always tryin to get more and more, better and better,

why not settle for what might help a neighbor.

After all, we figure someone else will if don't

Achin' and hurtin' 7 days a week, 24 hours a day

and I keep askin why am I here, who is this for?

All I know that is tha it ain't for me

Wanting to go home, where is it again?

Missin' my kid, yester day was his birthday

Is that 7 or maybe its 8

Better put those crusty, worn boots back on

Better grab the hard hat too

"Come on", its time to go back to work

Second Draft of Back to Work

Back to Work
Why do all these people keeping me down on the ground?
Are they trying to keep me from something, stopping something?
Make me forget where I came from?
They keep on trying to keep it quiet, in enclosed walls.
Not allowing any room for what may be a blip in the system
But who are they really hurting, me or themselves?
More than enough is not enough for these guys
Why not think of your needy neighbors on earth
Or maybe even sick Mother Nature herself
Of course, I forgot, it is easier to ignore than act
Lamborghinis can help them zoom by their problems, no?
Besides, if you don’t someone else will, right?
Hurting my arms and breaking my back
I ask, do you really need that 81st floor?
Dubai has 80, so we have to have more
I am yearning to go home be back with my kid
Yesterday was her birthday, was that 7 or 8
I can’t even remember when I saw her last
There is the call, better get dressed
Oww my foot, ouch my head
“Wait up you guys”
Piled in the bus rolling out to work
The people in those cars don’t dare to look
They are ignoring us, but they know were here
Are we there already, is she just straight ahead?
Here we go again
It is time to go back to work
