Instructions:
1. Make a list of possible sources to use
-Qatarsucks (all about how workers are treated *very vile)-
-600 Striking Workers Win Battle-
-Labour Rights in the Gulf (seems very accurate, tells you approximate wages)-
-Blood, Sweat and Tears (Nepalese workers cheated)-
-Qatar Seeks Tens of Thousand Workers (Suicide stats)-
-Gay Workers Banned in Qatar-
-Human Trafficking & Modern-day Slavery State of Qatar (A summary on the many things that sponsors do to workers)-
-Embassy of Qatar- Labour Laws (All the labour laws in Qatar, very official and confusing to me)-
-Asian Workers Riot in Dubai (cause 1 million dollars worth of damage)-
-The Secret World of Women (South Asian woman workers in Qatar)-
-Human Traffiking and Modern Day Slavery-
-The 7 Wonders of Working in Qatar-
2. Review the sources
-Qatarsucks: This site gives more information than govermental sites. It tells the truth because they cite the sources, but I am wondering if they are overexaggerating because the entire website is negative, including the comments. The comments have to be accepted by the editor before they are posted.
-600 Striking Workers Win battles: I think this site is reliable because the entire website is dedicated to speaking out for workers of the world that cannot speak for themselves. This organization has supporters from all over the world. The website states clearly what they stand for and tells many useful and shocking but true, facts that are plagueing this world.
-Labour Rights in the Gulf: The facts seem very reasonable, but I am not completely sure if this site is reliable because it is a report written by "anonymous person". This report gives some really useful links that are from professional companies (e.g Gulfnews).
-Blood, Sweat, Tears: This article is from a professional website (Nepali News), but I wonder if all the facts are true? If this website is Nepalese, then they probably want to make anything concerning their people seem worse to make people feel sorry for them. Or, perhaps, they have other reasons. However, the facts seem reasonable.
-Qatar Seeks Tens of Thousand Workers: I think this site is reliable because it shows when the artical was posted, including time, who posted it and date. The information seems very reasonable and accurate.
-Gay Workers Banned in Qatar: I think this site is reliable because the site has contact information. Also, this site seems very official because it shows you the laws that the world has enforced against gay and lesbian people. This site tells when it was last edited, and when things were posted. The people who have posted on this site or from universities (some are from specific universities teaching law), and colleges. However, the article, Gay Workers Banned in Qatar was dated in 1997, so this may not be the most reliable site to use.
-Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery State of Qatar: I think this site is not very reliable because they have given a warning:
| |
|
CAUTION: The following links have been culled from the web to illuminate the situation in Qatar. Some of these links may lead to websites that present allegations that are unsubstantiated or even false. No attempt has been made to validate their authenticity or to verify their content
|
This clearly shows that the site is not very reliable.
-Embassy of Qatar Labour Laws: This site is not very useful to me because I can't understand what they are stating. The language is still too diffcult and official for me to understand. However, it seems to be reliable because the labour laws are from the official Embassy of Qatar website, which means it is run by professionals.
-Asian Workers Riot in Dubai: This site seems reliable to me because it is from Al Jazeera the channel, which is watched world wide. I trust Al Jazeera because of the documentries I saw in Mr. Raisdana's class about how workers really live (Blood, Sweat and Tears). All the facts agree to everything I have learnt about present day labour.
-The Secret World of Woman: I don't think this site is very reliable because it is someone's blog. However, it does have information that agrees with all the rest of my research. The woman who wrote the blog lives in Doha, which gives it a little more validness. But why would someone want to lie about this? This would not be my first choice of best sources.
-Human Traffiking and Modern Day Slavery: I don't think this site is very reliable because it doesn't show who wrote the artical or any contact information. The information is about human traffiking and modern day slavery in Kuwait. However, the information is the same as I have found regarding Qatar.
-The 7 Wonders of Working in Qatar: I don't think this is a very good source because it doesn't give me a lot of information and it is from someone who hasn't sited their sources. There is no contact information, and it is a blog.

Questions:
- What makes people immigrate to these conditions?
I think this will help people understand WHY these people chose (if they have any choice) these low paying, difficult jobs and help them understand just how fortunate they are.
- What is the worst and best thing about being a worker?
I think this will help people relate to the workers more closely and will truthfully view a worker’s perspective on things.
- Do your family completely depend on your job as an income?
I think this will show people how hard workers have to work and will help touch people’s hearts in my poem.
- Who or what do you miss the most?
I think this question will show people that we are all more similar than we all thought. We are all people and have feelings. This will help my poem relate to people more, and therefore make them think about our similarities, not our differences.
- How do non-workers treat you?
I think this will be a wake up call to a lot of people on how they treat “lower class” people. I hope this question will inspire many people to change and view these people differently.
One of my favorite and most inspiring songs:
Hero
Nickelback
I'm so high. I can hear heaven.
I'm so high. I can hear heaven.
Oh but heaven, no heaven don’t hear me.
And they say that a hero could save us.
I’m not gonna stand here and wait.
I'll hold on to the wings of the eagles.
Watch as we all fly away.
Someone told me that love would all save us.
But how can that be, look what love gave us.
A world full of killing, n' blood-spilling
that world never came.
And they say that a hero could save us.
I’m not gonna stand here and wait.
I'll hold on to the wings of the eagles.
Watch as we all fly away. hi-igh-igh!
Now that the world isn't ending,
it's love that I’m sending to you.
It isn’t the love of a hero,
and that’s why I fear it won’t do.
And they say that a hero could save us.
I’m not gonna stand here and wait.
I'll hold on to the wings of the eagles.
Watch as we all fly away.
And they're watching us
(Watching Us)
They're watching us
(Watching Us)
as we all fly away.
And they're watching us
(Watching us)
They're watching us
(Watching us)
As we all fly away,
(Yeah)
Yeah.
And they're watching us
(Watching us)
They're watching us
(Watching us)
As we all fly away
(Yeah, yeah. Whoa-oh.)
Here is another good one by Nickelback;
"If Everyone Cared"
From underneath the trees, we watch the sky
Confusing stars for satellites
I never dreamed that you'd be mine
But here we are, we're here tonight
Singing Amen, I, I'm alive
Singing Amen, I, I'm alive
[Chorus:]
If everyone cared and nobody cried
If everyone loved and nobody lied
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride
Then we'd see the day when nobody died
And I'm singing
Amen I, Amen I, I'm alive
Amen I, Amen I, Amen I, I'm alive
And in the air the fireflies
Our only light in paradise
We'll show the world they were wrong
And teach them all to sing along
Singing Amen, I, I'm alive
Singing Amen, I, I'm alive
(I'm alive)
[Chorus x2]
And as we lie beneath the stars
We realize how small we are
If they could love like you and me
Imagine what the world could be
If everyone cared and nobody cried
If everyone loved and nobody lied
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride
Then we'd see the day when nobody died
When nobody died...
[Chorus]
We'd see the day, we'd see the day
When nobody died
We'd see the day, we'd see the day
When nobody died
We'd see the day when nobody died
